The Basics of Pediatric Sleep: Intro to Pediatric Insomnia

Part six of our on-demand course for pediatric clinicians, “The Basics of Pediatric Sleep,” introduces pediatric insomnia.

We start off with the diagnostic criteria, and how these differ for pediatric patients. This is followed by the evidence base for insomnia treatments, behavior theory (which is critical to understand why treatments do and don’t work), and types of insomnia.

Sleep onset associations are things that are present at bedtime to help a child fall asleep, but then are needed during the night to help a child return to sleep following a normal nighttime arousal. Positive sleep onset associations can be done by the child without any assistance, while negative sleep onset associations require a parent or other situation that is beyond the child’s control.

However, in this preview video, I describe common types of negative sleep onset associations, as well as how I explain sleep onset associations to parents.
